After many years of making do with old competition equipment Umina Surf Life Saving Club Boat Section has acquired a new boat for this season, made possible through the sponsorship by NRMA Ocean Beach Holiday Park. “The new craft has already paid dividends and made our crews much more competitive with finals performances from all three crews in the first couple of rounds of the Peter’s Series Surf Boat competition” said Ian Backhouse, Umina Surf Club Boat Captain. “The Under 19 Women’s crew took out first place in the final on the 18th October at Terrigal in the Under 23’s division and finished 4th at Stockton on the 1st November. A sensational performance given that this is a new crew this year and one rower, Olivia Brown, has never rowed before” Ian went on to say.
The club is deeply grateful for the injection of funds and our young competitive members are reaping the rewards of this newer and faster boat.
The club works closely with NRMA Ocean Beach Holiday Park on a couple of other levels. We patrol the southern end of Ocean Beach looking after the public and patrons of the Holiday Park and Bob Powell our Chief Instructor conducts surf awareness and safety courses for parents and children at the Holiday Park during the school holidays. At times we also provide lifeguard supervision of their swimming pool.
NRMA Ocean Beach Holiday Park Manager Vanessa Fordyce said “We are building a great relationship between the two organisations and have used the facilities of the Umina Surf Club for functions, conferences and group meetings. We are very proud of our commitment to the community through our ongoing involvement with the surf club. Overall the relationship has many benefits for both parties and we hope our relationship will continue to provide the club members, public and our patrons with many and varied opportunities into the future.”
